Interlaken Kindergarten’s end of Term 3 celebrations

Interlaken Kindergarten celebrated the end of Term 3 with an excursion to the Kew Traffic School. The children learnt all about road and bike safety including wearing a fitted helmet, sticking to the bike path, holding an adult’s hand when crossing roads and exiting a car from the kerb side. The children enjoyed riding their bikes around the school’s roads and playing in the trams, trains and shops.

On the last day of Term 3 Interlaken Kindergarten celebrated Footy Day by dressing up in their favourite footy team’s colours. The children and educators went to the school oval across the road to kick the football and run around. After this they enjoyed a special footy lunch of sausage rolls, pies, pasties and fresh fruit.

Edithvale Preschool’s chicken Rainbow Sparkles saved from life-threatening bound egg

Edithvale Preschool’s beloved chicken, Rainbow Sparkles, recently went missing from her coop. When she returned a few days later, she appeared to be very unwell.

Veterinary hospital nurse, Laura Hook, was dropping her child off at the school and discovered the chicken was “egg bound” , which means she was unable to lay her egg.

After a brief round of treatment at the Aspendale Gardens Veterinary Hospital the errant egg was released.

You can read the full story about Rainbow Sparkles in the Mordialloc Chelsea Leader.

Discovering frogs at Hurstbridge Hub Children’s Centre

A few weeks ago Ella at Hurstbridge Hub Children's Centre discovered two tiny frogs hopping about on the centre’s veranda.

The children slowly approached the frogs and observed them as they hopped around. The educators explained this may be a dangerous place for them and carefully relocated them to the natural pond puddle space at the back of the yard. They transferred them into a bucket of water using a piece of paper and poured them into a clear container before releasing them into the pond.

Throughout the experience the children could openly express their feelings and ideas about what they knew about frogs and initiate interactions and conversations with the educators to further their understanding.

The children involved displayed a sense of belonging to their environment and were all keen to participate in solving the problem of finding the frogs a new space to explore.

The visit inspired the educators to set up a frog play space to further extend the children’s learning about frog habitats, characteristics and life cycles.
