Welcome to Yallambie Park Kindergarten!

At Yallambie Park Preschool emphasis is placed on encouraging children to have a positive approach to learning. Activities and experiences are provided to enable children to develop to their full potential and to encourage a feeling of self worth. We provide an atmosphere that values each child as an individual in a warm and caring environment.

The program focus is to extend and develop children’s skills. These skills promote and foster your child’s confidence and independence. A variety of stimulating and educational indoor and outdoor activities and experiences will be offered to your child.

Preschool is guided 'informal education'. This means that the children are free to move from activity to activity and work at their own pace, under guidance from the teacher. Mat time is when children learn to work co-operatively in a larger group. When the children are playing they are in fact learning skills and attitudes that will be valuable to them at school, and in later life.

The program we provide centres around children’s prior experiences, knowledge, abilities and interests. The educational objectives for individuals and the group are based on the following developmental areas:

Social Skills

The children are learning to interact with others by:

  • Sharing and taking turns
  • Respecting the rights of others, and standing up for their own rights
  • Solving conflicts verbally

Creativity and Imagination

These are encouraged by the use of:

  • Art materials (painting, drawing, collage)
  • Drama (puppets, dress-ups, group drama)
  • Music (listening to, singing and making music)
  • Movement and dance (individual and group)
  • Sensory play (clay, sand, water, rice, finger paint etc.)

Thinking Skills

These are developed through:

  • Problem solving during play; for example – working out how to stop a tower from falling over, or how to do a puzzle.
  • Language develops when a child is participating in discussions, stories and poetry, and also when expressing themselves to peers and teachers.

Physical Skills

These are developed through a range of activities including:

  • Climbing
  • Jumping
  • Cutting
  • Threading
  • Woodwork

Beginning Literacy and Numeracy Program

At Yallambie Park Preschool we believe in capturing the 'learning moment' particularly with the 4 year old children. If your child shows readiness we will help them develop the skills they require to begin reading and writing. A lot of the maths (numeracy) program will be incidental i.e. the children will be gaining and practising essential skills without realising they are learning. We also work on counting skills, one to one correspondence, recognising numerals, shape, classification, estimation and measurement.
