Our orientation procedure is flexible and staff will work with families to meet their individual needs to ensure the process is successful.

Enrolling your child in a centre can leave families and children with different emotions. For some families this may be the first time the child/parents have been away from one another. The orientation process is a way to provide both families and children with support during this time. It allows the staff, children and families to begin to build on relationships that will provide each child with consistent and high quality care.

Families are encouraged to visit the centre with their child before starting. This gives the families an opportunity to meet the staff who will be looking after their child. It also gives the staff an opportunity to meet the families and exchange information on the child and most importantly it gives the child the opportunity to have a look around at the room they will be in and get to know the staff and other children in the group.

The best times for families to orientate would be between 9 am – 11am and 3:00pm – 4:30pm. These times will give the families an opportunity to see the children during mealtimes, transitions and at play. Between 12:00 noon -2:30 pm is quiet time in most of the rooms and there is not much happening. Families are also encouraged to stay for lunch routine.

For the first visit we would encourage the family to stay with the child in the room. Ask the staff questions about the room and any queries you may have about the routines etc. your child will feel secure with you there and will explore the room and activities.

For the second visit, families are encouraged to stay in the room for a short period maybe 10-15 min, say goodbye to your child, letting them know that you will be back shortly and leave the room. Feel free to make yourself a cuppa or have a flick through the magazines in the staff room. You can use the windows to have a peek in and see how your child is going. Families need to stay on the premises during the orientation process. This visit will give the child the opportunity to be on their own to begin the transition of separation from their parents/guardians, and that you will be back. This may be a nervous time for both you and your child so we recommend staying out of the room for at least 20- 30 mins.

Families are encouraged to orientate for as many days as they are comfortable with to help settle their child into the centre. It is also good for families as the more time they spend at the centre, the more confident and comfortable they feel leaving.

During your orientation staff will provide with as much feedback as possible on how your child had gone while you were not in the room.

Feedback on the orientation procedure is welcome from families; they can discuss this with the staff in their room, the coordinator or by completing our feedback form.

As families need to stay on the premises for orientation, no fees are charged during this time.

Things to remember for the first day:

  • Ensure you say goodbye, tell the child where you are going and that you will return to take them home, for example after sleep.
  • Leave something of yours with the child at care in your absence, for example a scarf or book.
  • Take the child over to a favourite game or activity and engage them in play.
  • Use staff to support your departure, make it swift, it helps to create boundaries.
  • Be reassured that your child will be fine; we will contact you if there are any problems.
  • Do not hesitate to contact the centre to check on your child through out the day.
